3asy Money: Creative Accounting In The Best Possible Sense

Why is it called ‘in the black’? You’ve got two options, black or red, and while red is clearly the danger zone, being the colour of warnings, blood, embarassment and rage, black seems no less positive. There’s a certain pessimistic undercurrent that comes with black, a resignation that it’s all temporary, that The Red awaits underneath you, an endless sea of poverty and debt. Why not green? Any other pairing of bad and good would have green. There’s no such thing as a black traffic light. Anyway, bottom line, money ain’t fun. However, the guys at Nyquist want to change your opinion on that, and do a pretty convincing job of it too with their brilliant 3asy Money app, a money managing tool that’s out now for iPhone.

First thing you notice is that 3asy Money looks terribly cool. Bond-cool. It’s the sort of thing you’d imagine James whipping out to check up on his multiple offshore accounts. Steel blue permeates, surrounded sleek shapes and slick text. It’s hard to imagine your not rolling in it when dealing with an interface this convincing.

Yet 3asy Money is not just a pretty face. It’s a valuable, resourceful app that makes managing-money extremely simple. The Nyquist team have certainly put a lot of effort into their product, and it shows. You can’t make an app like this on a whim; when you’re dealing with numbers and long lists, you have to plan through thoroughly, and Nyquist’s committment to a convenient finacial planner are clear from the get go. It’s user-friendly to a fault, and never looks like it’s trying hard to be so.

Features abound in the app, but the core mechanic is quite simple. You’ve got Spend, Take In and View, all rather self explanatory. You can create budgets for every aspect of your life, or simply whichever one you feel deserves the most attention. Cool visualisations of your spending and income make tracking the funds a piece of pie, or literally a piece of pie chart if that’s your thing. The handy Budget Summary lets you micro-manage your specified budgets by day, week and month (sometimes a Herculean task), and really plays to the app’s strength of fitting right into your lifestyle with ease. Convenience is the name of the game.

It’s a stretch to call any kind of budgeting ‘fun’, but 3asy Money does the next best thing; it makes it blessedly simple and more than a little stylish. Nyquist have created a winner here, and we’re excited to see what they do next. Rumour has it their upcoming project is a game, so we’re looking forward to checking that out when it hits next year. All in all, you can’t go wrong with 3asy Money, a valuable ally in the uphill struggle against The Red.
