Whatever the dream ends up being, surely a component of it is to make money while you sleep. What better way to work than that? In fact, it would be great to do a lot of things while you sleep; learn a language, hone your mind, etc. We spend how ever many minutes of our lives sleeping, you think by now we might’ve learned to do something productive with that time. While it may not necessarily benefit you on a profound level, the developers at R2 games have found a way to let you progress while you do less (interesting aside: there’s a cognitive bias that renders a statement more believable if it rhymes). Their game is called EZ PZ RPG; it’s new and out now for iOS and Android.
The interesting thing about EZ PZ RPG is that it’s a traditional RPG with a twist; this baby lets you level up while you do nothing. Once you’ve selected your character and chosen a class for them (Mage, Warrior or Hunter, with male or female variants for each of these), it’s off into the maelstrom to battle a hoard of ugly, devious bastards. Once you’ve hit battle, you can leave the game, and you’re little guy will keep hacking. I booted up the game, selected my character (a female huntress with the rather inglorious name ‘Clark’) and sent her into the fray. I played a while, put it down, came back two hours later and Clark was still hammering away, having grown three levels. EZ PZ.
That might sound like a lazy approach to an RPG (or LAY-Z as this game might have it), but it actually works surprisingly well for the handheld format; a small smartphone screen is too miniscule to engage on an epic, hours-long quest that we traditionally associate with RPGs. It works so much better in bite-size chunks. And hey, it’s all the more exciting to come back and see how your little comrade has been getting on in your absence, making you more invigorated to get involved with the game again. So ‘passive play’ is definitely the right choice here.
Also, the fact that the rest of the game is so detailed is proof enough that the developers have put buckets of their time in here; all the traditional RPG hallmarks are present and correct. There’s tonnes of gear to equip and upgrade, swords, bows, spears, axes, spells, the list goes on. There’s also the cool ability to team up with allies, both virtual and real, and fight against other players from around the world in one-on-one combat. There’s literally loads to explore here. Immediately accessible to newcomers due to its passive nature, while remaining complex and rewarding for experienced players who want to dive in deep, EZ PZ RPG is the real deal.
