Troll Face Quest: The Art Of The Troll

For those not in the know, the ‘trollface’ is an internet meme that first appeared as a rage comic character wearing a mischievous smile meant to represent the facial expression of an internet troll (a form of online behavior meant to intentionally frustrate or annoy someone else. The image is most commonly used to portray a character as a troll in rage comics, or alternatively, to identify oneself or another participant as such in online discussions. In the ever expanding world of smartphone apps, some quick-witted developer has seen fit to give the little guy his own game, which comes to us in the form of Troll Face Quest, a pointless yet amusing adventure of thinking outside the box. It’s out now for iOS.

This game is big, brash and very difficult. Adhering to the true nature of the troll face, the game presents you with a series of puzzles which you have to solve by thinking in the right way. This usually involves some sort of lateral thinking, as the answer won’t always be as obvious as the game makes out. For example, in the first level, you have to figure out which matchsticks to move in order to complete a sum that equals 9. Pretty quickly, you can tell that moving one matchstick will leave you with 6 + 3 = 9, which is correct.

Just when you think you’ve solved it however, the game throws the same puzzle back at you, and you have to re-solve it in a not so straightforward way. Troll Face Quest does a really good job of making you feel smart, though it is tough to make it through to the final answer. The appalling English translations don’t help matters much either, though maybe it’s all part of one big troll to make the game more difficult.

Either way, this is a genuinely challenging game that is hugely rewarding on a lot of levels. The interface is bright and colourful, and the puzzles, featured in 30 different levels, are consistently zany and frustrating (in a good way). The bizarre solutions, some of which you’ll never see coming, will no doubt keep you hooked. It’s an adventurous and offbeat puzzler, so for those who love these kind of challenging games, it’s bound to be a winner. A small confession: I couldn’t even make it past the first level in time to write this review, it is actually that tough. However, it’s addictive enough to make me want to keep trying to beat it!
