Back in high school I was shamefully bad when it came to pop culture and musical references. Often I’d find myself in group situations, simply nodding along to conversations about the latest ‘Top of the pops’ performances or hottest 100 albums. As I grew older and more into the person that I am today, I did improve upon my knowledge somewhat, but it’s still a far cry from what some of my contemporaries had accomplished by the age of 14. It’s not that I didn’t or don’t like music, it’s simply that my brain never seemed to be able to retain and recall any of that kind of information. So I was a little skeptical when a friend invited me to download SongBand, a new music-quiz app that features online music quizzes, knowing instantly that I’d be utterly rubbish at it.But to my joyous surprise, that wasn’t exactly the case. Although I did miss (and still do) a few of the lesser known songs, you’ll find that you know a hell of a lot more than you think you do. It’s also great fun to relive nostalgic classics from the ‘80s and ‘90s as well as hits from 2014 and 15, movie soundtracks, dance tunes and love songs.
Each quiz is five questions long and vary in style from speed races, picture rounds, item battles and single play. After each quiz gamers are asked to rate the quality of the quiz (which in turn earns them ‘coins’); this feature aims to filter out bad quizzes to make sure that they’re always fun and challenging. An additional quiz-maker feature of the app actually allows users to create their own quizzes, the creator Kikiwa believes that this is the “Fastest way to cover the various and detailed interests of music lovers”.
SongBand is free to download from the iTunes and is available to play on both iPhone and iPad. Like with any free-to-play apps, you can expect a fair amount of ads in between play, but so far there are no ‘pop-ups’ so they remain fairly non-invasive.
If you feel like brushing up on your music knowledge skills or fancy yourself a bit of a quiz-master then download SongBand for free, from the App Store today!
