How to set up VPN for your iPhone

Setting up VPN for your IOS device is made very easy due to the apps available. Whether you want to gain region-restricted content or if you travel the globe and want your iPhone to think it’s still in your home country, a VPN will help you out.

What is VPN

Before we start, you’re probably wondering what VPN is or you don’t know much about it. VPN is a private network that allows you to connect to the internet through a server which is run by a VPN provider. A VPN can create a secure connection by rerouting the connection to that location.

You also need to take into consideration that you need to have your iPhone updated to the newest version of iOS or you’ll find that the VPN will stop halfway while you’re using it. It’s possible that it may still work but it’s better to make sure it’s updated.

It is often used when logging onto a public Wi-Fi.

How to set up VPN for your iPhone

First of all, you’re going to have to download a VPN app to your iPhone. Some of the apps I’ve used in the past include ExpressVPN and Star VPN. ExpressVPN allows you to bypass very secure networks, however, you are only allowed a 7-day free trial then you have to start paying. Star VPN is free and it does bypass blocked connect, however it isn’t very reliable and sometimes it cuts out. A new one on the market is Cargo VPN – it allows to bypass blocked websites and has 1-day free trial.

Setting up VPN

After you’ve downloaded your chosen app, some will require you to sign up such as ExpressVPN.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap VPN.
  4. If you have more than one, select the VPN client you want to use.
  5. Toggle the Status switch on.

When you’re done with the VPN connection then you should switch it off.

If you don’t want to take these steps, then you can simply just go on the app and toggle the switch on. If you don’t have this option, then use the steps above.

Once you’ve completed this method, the VPN connection will become active. If you’re using the VPN to access a blocked app on a secure network, then make sure you close the app and open it again (if it was already open before you turned on the VPN) for the VPN to take its effect. Sometimes apps need to be refreshed in order for the VPN to work.

How to manually configure VPN for your iPhone

Most people will use the method above but however, you may not want to use the app to access VPN. You may want to use a specific VPN network. This is where you need to manually enable the VPN by using the information you have.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap VPN.
  4. Tap Add VPN Configuration.
