Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G Review

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G is definitely among the best foldable smartphones available today. With its powerful internal hardware and more reliable folding mechanism, it’s definitely a contender if you are seeking a new phone for the second half of 2020. Here are a few things to consider:

Display

When fully unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G offers you a spacious 7.6-inch display, turning itself into a small tablet. The display uses UTG or Ultra-Thin Glass material, which is more resistant to peeling and scratches. The external display’s size is 6.2-inch, protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus, you could guarantee better performance. The Gorilla Glass 6 also protects the read cover of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G.  With 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, the internal primary display should ensure fluid navigation and buttery smooth gaming.

Folding mechanism

Although you can see a crease on the display, we can be certain that the device is much stronger in terms of durability. Based on internal tests, UTG display and its hinge can be folded and unfolded hundreds of thousands of times without issue. With the hideaway hinge design, debris and dust won’t lodge between the components. Unlike with the first Fold model, you can be sure that those small particles won’t reach the underside of the display. Buyers can choose units with different hinge colours, like Metallic Blue, Metallic Red, Metallic Gold and Metallic Silver. As promised, the hinge may extend beyond the 75 to 115 degrees. This should bode well for the extended endurance of the folding mechanism.

Internal hardware

Users can be sure to get high performance operation with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC and 12GB of RAM. Gaming should be flawless and the resulting high frame rates will be represented well on the display. The basic model will have 256GB of internal storage and a more expensive model with 512GB of storage. There should be enough space for users to install many apps and record a lot of videos, especially if combined with Samsung Cloud service. There are two small battery packs at 2250mAh each and users can use 25W wired fast charging or 15W wireless charging.

Camera

Just like the original Fold device, we also get three cameras, wide, telephoto and ultra-wide with 12MP resolution each. However, these cameras have larger sensors to ensure better low-light performance and more detailed results. However, the telephoto seems like the same with the one used by the original model. Pictures should have excellent dynamic range, although colours can be a bit saturated and yellowish if you look closely. Photos produced by selfie camera are not as punchy and are more subdued. However, you can take selfies with the primary cameras set with the external display as viewfinder, especially with the phone fully folded.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G should be a head-turner with its good design. The hinge is incredibly durable and the 120Hz display feels really nice to use. The performance is smooth and the phone is very usable with just one hand. The stereo speakers promise good audio performance. However, the device is still quite heavy and thick to carry around. Unfortunately, some apps are not well-optimized for the squarish aspect ratio of the primary display and there’s no option for 8k video recording.
