The Asus ROG phone 3; What is it like: Review

Asus ROG Phone 3

Any high-end gaming smartphone is always an impressive piece of modern technology. This also applies to the Asus ROG Phone 3, with its gaming external aesthetics, huge display, and powerful hardware.

Design

If you have used the ROG Phone 2 before, the new ROG Phone 3 should share some similarities in terms of size and shape. There’s a glossy glass surface on the back. Although it attracts fingerprint smudges easily, the phone easier to grip during intense gaming. You can see a heat sink and an attractive ROG logo with RGB lights. There are a USB Type-C connector and a proprietary port for dedicated cooling or Asus DisplayDock. A couple of shoulder buttons make it easy to play first-person shooters, like COD: Mobile and PUBG Mobile. Aiming, firing, and throwing explosives are easy to do.

Display

For an enhanced gaming experience, the ROG Phone 3 comes with 6.59-inch AMOLED 144Hz display at 1080 x 2340 resolution, which ensures smooth gameplay. Asus promises 25ms touch latency, which gives your near instantaneous responses. It’s quite impressive, because iPhone 11 Pro Max and Galaxy Note 10 have 50ms latency. The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 should be very durable and can prevent unwanted scratches.

Camera

Both the primary 64MP wide and 13MP ultra-wide angle cameras produce satisfactory results, which are supported by a macro sensor for better close-up photography. The 24MP front-facing camera should deliver pretty detailed pictures. It is possible to record 4k videos at 120fps or 8k videos at 30fps.

Audio

Audio quality is crucial for any gaming experience and there are stereo speakers on the front that are directed toward user. Although these speakers make the top and bottom bezels slightly thicker, these should be a worthwhile trade-off. The sound quality should be detailed, thick and reasonably loud. Unfortunately, headphone jack can be connected only through the AeroActive Cooler add-on.

Software

The Asus ROG Phone 3 uses Android 10 operating system and it’s a good thing that Asus doesn’t bog down the experience with too many bloatware. There are obviously some gaming aesthetics on the interface, but it’s still a clean Android interface. PowerMaster app helps to improve battery life and Mobile Manager app optimizes the use of RAM when used for heavy-duty gaming.

Internal hardware

There’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ chipset for exceptional gaming performance. There are different RAM and storage configurations that users can choose. The basic version has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the most expensive version offers 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Battery

It takes plenty of battery juice for intensive gaming. The Asus ROG Phone is powered by a 6,000mAh battery, which is quite useful because you want to crank the display brightness up and enable the Always-On display feature. The battery should last you a day, even with heavier usages. To extend the lifespan of your battery, you may choose to limit the maximum charge to only 80 percent capacity. That’s really impressive.

Conclusion

Asus ROG Phone 3 definitely promises an all-round performance with its powerful chipset and sizable RAM. Even for the basic model, there’s a decent amount of storage to install plenty of games. The audio is loud and the gaming experience is superb, even without wearing a headset. And it can be classed as a high-end gaming smartphone.
