Apple has officially announced the iPhone 12 and its smaller sibling, the iPhone 12 mini. Both devices include 64GB versions that are priced at $829 and $729, respectively. Among Android users, the pricing seems to be quite high. Many low-cost Android devices priced under $300 already have 128GB of storage. We should also consider that iPhone 12 users will only get 57GB of free storage, because the some of the space is taken up by iOS and proprietary apps. Although most popular apps are generally small, users may soon run out space, if they store movies, install latest games and record videos. Common apps like Google Maps, Instagram, Gmail, Skype, Netflix, Discord and SoundCloud may take up nearly 1.5GB of space, which is quite acceptable. However, popular games like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG Mobile require around 2.5GB of space each. Genshin Impact alone requires about 8GB of space.
When it comes to taking photos, 64GB of internal storage should be adequate. Its possible to take thousands of photos before you run out of space. However, it is different thing if you regularly shoot videos at full 4k resolution at 60fps. At this resolution and frame rate, you will quickly fill up the internal storage. If you are planning to record videos often, it is a good idea to invest on 128GB or 256GB iPhone 12. However, because you can still fit nearly 3 hours of 4k videos on 57GB storage, it could be acceptable if you regularly transfer the recorded video to your PC or local storage. A 2TB hard drive is quite affordable today, so you may still choose 64GB iPhone and spend $60 on an extra hard drive for your PC. It’s a better option than getting a 256GB iPhone 12, which is $150 more expensive than the 64GB model. Again, it is only feasible if you are willing to regularly transfer files to your PC.
Alternatively, you may record videos at 720p resolution, which is adequate for typical social media uses. 720p videos require only a third of the storage needed for 4k videos. If you want to record 720p videos, they should be sufficient for your requirement. However, if it’s your preference to play large games, it is a good idea to get at least 128GB model instead, which is only $50 more expensive compared to the 64GB model. Even so, with the 64GB model, it is possible to install dozens of lighter games and store thousands of photos. You should get an iPhone 12 with 128GB of storage if you are more serious about playing demanding games, watching high resolution movies and recording high quality videos. A YouTuber or vlogger should get at least a 128GB model, because you need to take plenty of raw videos that will need to be edited later. You can capture 1080p or 4k videos in a few sessions without worrying that you run out of space. Choose a 256GB model if you rarely connect the iPhone with your PC for backing up files. As long as you know how to organize files, things will be more convenient.
