In case you don’t remember, Apple Maps was met with mostly negative reviews after its launch in 2012. Back then, every new update was full of bugs and navigating problems, which made Apple’s mapping service fall behind its main rival, Google Maps.
However, after many years of improvements, the Maps is finally back to the game. Now, it can offer a variety of useful features that help users navigate to their desired destination, whether they’re walking or using other means of transport. Plus, with the new iOS 14 update, the app also receives many new options to make navigation more easier for you. So, here are the 5 reasons why you should give App Maps a try.
Real-Time Transit Information

Starting in iOS 13 and higher versions, you can see up-to-date transit information for trains, buses, and other public transportations on Apple Maps. After searching for directions, just tap the bus icon. Then, the app will show you all options for local public transportation with details on where and how to catch it. Also, you can tap a specific suggestion to see more information like what line to take or if there are any delays.
Search Nearby Places

When you access the Search feature, a list of nearby locations you might want to visit will appear below. The list is divided into 8 categories:
- Foods
- Drinks
- Shopping
- Travel
- Services
- Fun
- Health
- Transportation
Each one contains multiple options and specific locations in order to give you the best review. For example, you will find hospitals, pharmacies, and even gyms with stars rating in the Health category .
Save Your Favorite Places
Now, Apple Maps helps you save a lot of time as it saves every place you have frequently visited as favorites. Here is how to do that:
- Search for the place you want to save.
- Swipe up the screen until you see Add to Favorites.
- Then, tap the command.
After that, they’ll automatically appear below the search field.
Look Around

Now, you can check out your destination before you even get there via the Look Around feature in Apple Maps! Similar to Google’s Street View, Look Around provides an interactive 360° view of the area.
After you find the spot you want to check, swipe up. If the location is one of the few places that support this feature, tap the thumbnail to activate Look Around. Besides, you can tap the binoculars icon (in the upper right) to show the 360° image at the top of your screen while looking at the map.
Cycling Routes

If you like riding bikes, then the new Cycling Routes feature is perfect for you! After choosing your destination, tap the bicycle icon. If your destination is reachable that way, the app will show you how to get there by bicycle. For certain cities, you can even get directions on real bike trails. Just tap the Go button to begin your ride!
Apple Maps has come a long way since 2012 and it is now at the point where we can ignore Google Maps. Plus, privacy is a huge advantage if you use the Apple Maps. So, why not give it another chance now?
