MediaTek is one of major chipset makers in the mobile industry and it continues to put up a fight against the dominance of Qualcomm. The Chinese company has introduced two new 5G-capable chipsets for flagship smartphones. They are decent solutions that provide premium features at more affordable costs. The Dimensity 1100 is a direct successor of the Dimensity 1000 Plus with 6nm manufacturing process with octa-core architecture with four mid-performance Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6GHz and four efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 2GHz. The Dimensity 1200 is a more powerful octa-core chipset with one high-performance Cortex-A78 core at 3GHz, three mid-performance Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6GHz and four efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 2GHz. Both chipsets have nona-core (9 cores) ARM Mali-G77 GPU with HyperEngine 3.0 technology. The Dimensity 1100 supports FHD+ resolution at 144Hz and QHD+ resolution at 90Hz, while the Dimensity 1200 suppors FHD+ resolution at 168Hz and QHD+ resolution at 90Hz.
Camera-wise, the MediaTek Dimensity 1100 supports 108MP primary camera and 32MP+16MP dual sensors. The Dimensity 1200 is a more capable chipset that supports 200MP primary camera and 32MP+16MP dual sensors. 5G data connectivity on both chipsets support both TDD and FDD spectrums, with up to two dual 5G SIM slots. Because of its high-performance Cortex-A78 core, the Dimensity 1200 is about 10 percent faster than Dimensity 1100.
On paper, the Dimensity 1200 will compete closely with the Snapdragon 870, which is an improved version of Snapdragon 865 Plus. The Snapdragon 870 has one high-performance Cortex-A77 core and three mid-performance Cortex-A77 with lower frequency. The Dimensity 1200 has similar arrangement but with high-performance Cortex-A78 core and three mid-performance Cortex-A78. ARM claims that Cortex-A78 is 20 percent faster than the Cortex-A77. Another important component is GPU. The Adreno 650 offers better performance than the Mali-G77 MC9 GPU on the Dimensity 1000+. The same Mali-G77 GPU on the Dimensity 1200 is about 13 percent faster, so it should greatly diminish the performance gap. The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 is a beast with four new Cortex-A78 cores, which are more advanced than the previous generation Cortex-A77 cores. It also has faster Mali G-77 GPU compared to the one used by previous Dimensity chipsets. It will be interesting to see how upcoming smartphone models with Dimensity 1100 or Dimensity 1200 will be priced. We could be certain that they will be cheaper than iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S21.
Redmi will be the first phone maker that releases gaming smartphone with Dimensity 1200. The company has revealed through Weibo that it will launch a new gaming smartphone with MediaTek’s chipset. Because it has a MediaTek chipset, Redmi’s upcoming smartphone could be priced aggressively compared to comparable models with Qualcomm’s chipsets. This should make the whole proposition quite enticing. When used for gaming, Qualcomm users can benefit from the Snapdragon Elite Gaming with features like Game Smoother, Game Colour Plus v2.0, desktop forward rendering, 10-bit color depth and True HDR game rendering. The HyperEngine 3.0 Gaming Technology used by Dimensity 1200 improves power efficiency, image quality, responsiveness and connectivity. It also supports augmented reality and ray tracing for 3D mobile games.
