MediaTek Releases the 5G M80 Chipset

MediaTek has released a new mobile chipset with 5G data connectivity. The M80 chipset comes with integrated 5G modem. Previously, MediaTek already released Dimensity 1100 and 1200 with 5G support. However, the M80 is a more advanced solution, because the 5G solution supports mmWave. It means, any smartphone with M80 chipset could offer blazing fast 5G data connectivity in standalone and non-standalone architectures. Theoretically, the M80 could ensure 3.76Gbps for uplink connection and 7.67Gbps for downlink. It supports up to 5G SIM slots, both with support for SA and NSA networks. For stable communication, there’s also the dual VoNR (Voice over New Radio). MediaTek wants to gain more share in the marketplace by offering a more capable 5G solution, because it supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands. Although mmWave has shorter range and can’t penetrate buildings, it is still useful for users who seek faster connection. There’s also the proprietary UltraSave technology from MediaTek that ensures better battery life with extensive power-saving capabilities. The standard 4G LTE data connectivity is still available as basic connectivity in areas that still don’t have 5G data connectivity.

The Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200 with 5G data connectivity promises more basic 5G experiences. These are the early 5G implementation from MediaTek that is usable for high-end and mid-range devices. Both Dimensity chipsets offer data connectivity from 2G and 5G. For photography performance, the Dimensity 1200 offers support for up to 200MP camera that can deliver better photography through the penta-core HDR ISP. For better dynamic range, there’s 4K HDR video capability. The MediaTek APU 3.0 hexa-core AI processor offers multi-task scheduler feature that improves power efficiency and reduces latency. The Dimensity 1100 is for more affordable devices with support for up to 108MP camera. It also comes with the same APU 3.0 hexa-core AI processor to ensure power efficiency and better performance. Both Dimensity chipsets come with various photography features, including HDR, AI noise reduction, AI-based multi-person bokeh and AI-based panorama night shot. The Dimensity 1200 is an octa-core chipset with one high performance ARM Cortex-A78 3GHz core, three mid-performance ARM Cortex A-78 cores with lower clock rate and four power-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores. There’s also six-core MediaTek APU 3.0 and nona-core integrated GPU. This ensures decent performance for many devices.

The Dimensity 1100 is also an octa-core chipset with four mid-performance ARM Cortex-A78 cores at 2.66GHz and four power-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores. It comes with nona-core ARM Mali-G77 integrated GPU with 6nm manufacturing process. The Dimensity 1200 supports up to 168Hz refresh rate to ensure enjoyable gaming experience and much smoother experience. The Dimensity 1000 offers support for slower 144Hz refresh rate that’s still very responsive for any mobile user. The MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 gaming feature integrates data concurrency and 5G with multi-touch boost for better touchscreen responsiveness. For better visuals, both chipsets come with AR applications and ray tracing. However, these features depend on the third-party game developer. Through Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity version, users can stream data simultaneously to multiple wireless devices.
