Samsung and Huawei have pioneered the mainstream release of foldable smartphones. At the moment, high prices and some technical issues are still plaguing the widespread adoption of these smartphones. Even so, smartphone makers are developing foldable smartphones and we will continue to see more foldable devices. Xiaomi has finally joined the competition with the release of Mi Mix Fold, its first ever smartphone with flexible display. During its major launch event, the company has also introduced the Mi 11 series and a smartwatch. For users who are eager to get a foldable smartphone, the Mi Mix Fold is offering a new alternative. More competition in this sector should drive down pricing and encourage innovation.
Design and display
In terms of design, the Mi Mix Fold looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy Fold. On the front, there’s a secondary display and the phone can fold inward. However, the Mi Mix Fold has a more advanced design feature compared to other foldable smartphones. The main display inside doesn’t have the troublesome notches and cut out. This gives users a much better display experience. When unfolded, we get a spacious 8.01-inch AMOLED display with 2480 x 1860 pixels resolution (WQHD+) and 4:3 aspect ratio. It supports DolbyVision and HDR+, while the 600 nits of brightness ensure good usability in outdoor situations. The quad-speaker stereo ensures great experience when listening to music or watching films, especially because the sound system uses the Harman Kardon technology. The secondary 6.52-inch display has 2520 x 840 pixels resolution, DolbyVision and 90Hz refresh rate.
As a flagship device, there’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 inside to ensure exceptional performance. This means, the Mi Mix Fold has native support for 5G data connectivity and Wi-Fi 6. The basic variant has 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage, which is adequate for most users. A special 16GB RAM and 512GB storage variant has a nice ceramic back.
On the back, the 108MP primary camera is the same with the on the Xiaomi Mi 11i. It offers improved low-light performance by binning 9 pixels into 1 pixel. The 13Mp ultra-wide camera offers 123-degree field of view. The third camera is a telemacro with liquid lens technology. As a macro camera it could focus 30cm and as a telephoto camera, it supports 3x optical zoom. A proprietary ISP+ chip, the Surge C1, allows good image processing for accurate automatic white balance, faster autofocus and others.
With 5,020 mAh battery, the Mi Mix Fold is certainly quite decent in terms of battery capacity. The 8.01-inch display with WQHD+ resolution will surely be the main battery juice drainer. Fortunately, the 67W quick charging feature cam top up the battery in just 40 minutes. This should be quite convenient for busy professionals.

The 12GB RAM and 512GB storage is available for $,1700, while the special 16GB RAM and 512GB storage variant with ceramic back is worth $2,000.
